While describing must see and places to visit in Riga, something came to my mind. For some reason I loved this city very, very much.. I was impressed both by the kind and shy attitude of Olia’s friendly family when they welcomed us in their home, and by the unspoiled naturalness of the city.. Even the fact that you stumble while walking the cobblestone streets is a sign of the naturalness of a city for me.. By the way, don’t forget to visit this city with your high heels.. You really can’t relax.

Well let’s see. We also made the warnings. Where should we visit in Riga, how should we plan? Let’s talk about some serious stuff. We came to this calm city on a sunny September.. Since the summer season is just about to end, we haven’t seen the freezing winter or the burning summer.

We had a cool, calm and peaceful 3 days. Especially in the Riga Old Town we got lost in the shadow of the colorful buildings, breathed by the river, lay in the parks, watched the people for hours trying to get to work in a hurry while sipping our coffee in the cute cafes on the corner.

Day 1 Riga Travel Guide

We wake up early in the morning. Leaking early the day before due to road fatigue, we wake up early the next morning when Olia’s cat wakes us up.. fuck pussy. 20 years old. huge size. And a cat is also a cold friend. Anyway !

Riga Streets-Latvia : The real Riga was in the center

We immediately throw ourselves on the street, having a few snacks at home with local breakfasts.. Weather is sweet. Breathe right in the streets. Then, as soon as you step outside, you can see how old Riga’s houses are, especially outside the city, the rattle of the trams in the middle of the street, the ability of model-like girls to walk in crooked roads with high heels, the view of broken-down houses, old walls whose paint has been completely peeled off. we are surprised to see. How so ! Is this Riga now ?

Olia’s “Sea. This is the real Riga. Now I’m going to take you to the dream world, where the tourists go, where the rich roam.” we hope that. It’s so old! We were the backpack youth who flopped in Helsinki just 2 days ago. We were surprised that the atmosphere changed so quickly in 2 days.

1. Statue of Liberty (Milda)

We are jumping on the tram. Destination Old Town area. You know, in almost every country’s most important square, there are statues erected so that the country does not forget its past.

Here is the Statue of Liberty, which is located at the most important point of Latvia, was erected in 1935 when Latvia declared its independence.. “Homeland” and “freedom” are written on the bronze statue of a woman holding up 3 stars.. These 3 stars are believed by some to represent Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

2. Old Town

Then, we begin to sneak into the heart of the city.. It actually happens just like Olia said.. Those old houses are being replaced by buildings that allow you to enjoy the view with their historical texture.

This place is on the Unesco World Heritage list and is known as the old city area with its cobblestone streets, cute cafes and restaurants.. Especially in the region where Art Nouveau style architecture is dominant, buildings decorated with floral motifs and human figures draw our attention.

3. Cat house

We are slowly moving into the Old Town area. The 2 cats on the top of this building are one of the touristic symbols of the city.. According to the story, a trader used to be expelled from the Merchants Guild of that time.

He was also devastated by this and had 2 black cat statues made on the roof of his house right next to the Guild, and the cats had their backs to that Guild.. The traders were also very angry at this and later made peace again.

4. St.. Peter’s Church

We love the Old Town from the first minute. We watch couples getting married in front of this church, which is one of the most beautiful buildings in the region.. I ask Olia: “What kind of marital relations do you have?”

“Don’t Ask Deniz. It doesn’t work very well in our country.. Most of them are already getting divorced. Or many Latvians can’t get married! Don’t you see the girls like models around you? They’re always alone too.” When people are alone, why are so many people alone?” sentence appears. “Well,” I say to Olia, “these girls will be alone.. will be in Turkey. I swear they’ll burn that city down!”. starts to laugh. “I know, Deniz, I know.” I’m thinking something like. Anyway.

Now I won’t go into that stuff at all.. Where we were ? This church was built in 1209.. If you wish, you can take the elevator to the top and enjoy the view of Riga.. we didn’t go out. Instead, we decided to go to the roof of the Radisson Blue hotel.

5. House of the Blackheads and Town Square

Every European city has something in common! As you get lost in the narrow streets, you suddenly appear in a square.. Heh, this is the most important square in Riga.. This building, which you will see in the promotions of the city, was restored on the anniversary of Riga’s foundation.

The building, beautified by red tiles and colorful ornaments, was formerly a guild of foreign merchants called black-heads.. They were called blackheads because the merchants had black hair.. It now serves as a tourism office. Especially in the evenings, this is a place where you can take pictures and take your lover’s arm and wander around.. Let me tell you !

6. Riga Jauniela

This place says Olia “It is very famous. A lot of movies were shot on this street.” I guess if we were traveling normally, it would say “Street!” we would pass. It is good to travel with someone who knows. This is a beautiful street.. You should definitely walk and take pictures.

7. Riga Dome Cathedral

As we continue to walk in the heart of the Old Town, we head towards Riga Cathedral, one of the most magnificent buildings in the city. They are the largest place of worship in the Bals. This building, which looks quite imposing from the outside, is especially famous for its huge organ and concerts inside.

8. Daugava River

We say let’s get some rest. We turn our direction to the Daugava River, the lifeblood of Riga.. Used as Riga’s gateway to the world for centuries, this river divides Riga into two.

Actually, it’s like that, oh my, there’s nothing to see but we’re walking along to breathe. In the cool weather of summer, this region, which is one of the most beautiful places in Riga, is worth walking.

9. Riga Castle

We see this castle on our right. They were used as a base in their time.. But now it is used as the office of the President of Latvia. We can’t get inside and we head back to the Old Town area, in the shadow of Riga’s finely inlaid buildings.

10. The three brothers

This postcard-like structure, which is the promotional face of Riga, was destroyed during the Soviet occupation, but was rebuilt in the 1990s.. This colorful building, similar to which we have seen in Stockholm, is perfect for taking pictures.

After that, we stop by St James’s Cathedral. As in every city, we see plenty of Cathedrals and Churches in this old city area.

11. Pilsetas Canal

Our next stop is this green park in the heart of the city and the canal in the middle of it, which we miss as people living in a city like Istanbul.. I’m talking about beautiful trees, a canal in the middle, a park around which you can walk barefoot.

Again, as in many European cities, we learn that lovers threw padlocks, which they wished to have eternal love, into this river.. For some reason, it’s very, very popular to rely on locks in these European continent countries.

12. Riga Russian Orthodox Church

We are now leaving the Old Town . Destination Russian Orthodox Church. You know, “Russian culture still makes its mark in Latvia.” I said it. This is also true in religion.. Majority of the people are Orthodox.

This church is one of the most beautiful religious buildings in the city.. Made in the 1800’s. We are lucky especially those who visit on the weekend.. We pray too, watching rituals, burning candles, and the praying Latvian people.

13. Alberta Jela (Iela) Avenue

Art Nouveau architecture. What is this architecture? In fact, it is known as an art movement in which the ornaments are more intense and the folds and vegetal patterns are used abundantly.. In fact, one of the important names of this movement is Antoni Gaudi.

We walk the street designed by Russian Architect Mikhail Eisenstein, following the beauties of the magnificent buildings.. There is even a Riga Art Nouveau Museum here, but we do not enter it because it is late.

14. Jurmala District

Then we hop on the train and head straight to this seaside resort. It is 25 km away and can be reached by train.. Train ticket prices 1.50 Euros. You can take the train directly from Riga train station. This is a coastal area covered with green forests and very luxurious houses.

Actually, according to our region (I’m talking about Fethiye), it’s a nice place to breathe, at least. It was especially enjoyable to walk in the forest and climb the tower.. You can linger for 5-6 hours while you’re here.

15. Riga Central Market

We return to Riga in the afternoon and go to this market, one of the most beautiful local markets in the city.. In this market, which is one of the largest markets in Europe, colorful stalls, fish, meat, fruits and vegetables are sold on the stalls.. This is a very nice place to observe the life of the local people.. I definitely recommend it to you.
