Public transportation and seat sensitivity in Thessaloniki
A summer day in Thessaloniki where we enjoyed the August heat to the fullest. We continue to tour the city and see closely the intertwining of Greek and Ottoman culture.. Due to the weather in Thessaloniki, which we try to visit on foot as much as possible, we often take public transportation vehicles.
Thessaloniki is a city that should be taken as an example in public transportation.. Although there was no investment in the city due to the Athens-Thessaloniki conflict; The city municipality has accomplished important things in transportation.. After the underground train in Athens started operating in 2004, the underground train works in Thessaloniki are still continuing.. Almost all of the urban transportation in the city is done by municipal buses.. When we think about the municipal buses in Turkey, it would be difficult and wrong to compare.
First of all, bus ticket prices pretty cheap. 25 cents-€ for student, 50 cents-€ for full; At the same time, with a ticket you buy, you can get on other vehicles for free four times in an hour.. In other words, a student can go from one end of the city to the other with four different buses for 25 cents.. In addition, you can buy 24-hour tickets for one Euro per student and two Euros according to the full tariff, and benefit from unlimited public transportation within 24 hours.. Turkey should be reconsidered. If we need to talk about the understanding of social state, Thessaloniki Municipality is the biggest example.
When we look at the public transportation in Turkey, especially in the big cities, an officer definitely checks the fee payment part.. We do not have any kind of trust in our own citizens.. Because if we don’t leave an attendant at the payment point, the idea is that everyone gets on the vehicles without paying a fee.. As a Turkish citizen, I was very surprised to see that there is no such practice in Thessaloniki.. After the bus arrives at the stop where we are waiting for the bus, the driver opens all the doors of the bus; Afterwards, everyone gets on the bus from different doors and has their tickets read by the readers in different parts of the bus and sits down.. The reader machine prints the time of boarding on the ticket and keeps a record for the transfer process.. Instead of dealing with whether the passengers getting on the bus print tickets or not, the driver only performs his main duty as a driver.. Moreover, as all the passengers waiting at the bus stop do not get on through a single door, there is no crowding and waste of time is prevented.
So what happens to people who get on the bus and don’t show a ticket? You will ask how these people are audited.
A very valid question actually.. When I encountered the application, I asked this question by bringing the negative aspects of the application to my mind.. Even in the applications controlled by the officials in Turkey, our citizens think of getting on without paying, I guess, it was a question that has been on the minds there.
Thessaloniki Municipality has put its signature under a very good solution in this regard.. At different intervals, the city bus stops in one place and the ticket machine is disabled. Municipal inspectors get on the municipal bus and check the tickets of the passengers. If an adult is detected traveling with a student ticket or traveling without a ticket, then the penalty is 500 Euros.. I don’t think there is anyone who would risk such a fine for not paying 50 cents.. If we think about what will happen if he doesn’t pay the penalty anyway; If the fine is not paid within 1 month, the person is sent straight to jail.. I think it’s quite a deterrent.. I wish there were such practices in Turkey.
By wishing the metropolitan municipalities in Turkey not to ignore foreign practices in transportation; I would like to end my article with the memory of my life on a city bus in Thessaloniki.
While driving on an articulated city bus on one of the hot days of August, something caught my attention on the bus that was jammed.. An old woman must have boarded the bus after the market shopping, as she was traveling in one seat with tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers in the other seat.. After expressing that I wanted to sit down with a hand gesture to the woman because I was tired, I was surprised by the woman’s shouts in Greek.. After all, I didn’t know Greek and didn’t understand what she meant.. It was apparently the only point where the woman said you can’t sit next to me with the flames coming out of her eyes.. Thereupon, my Greek friend, with whom we went for a walk, started shouting at the woman in an extremely angry way.. Everyone on the bus joined the discussion after the woman shouted senselessly.. As a Turk, it was not possible for me to understand why the discussion was prolonged.. Although I asked my Greek friend why he was shouting, I did not get an answer.. The debate dragged on. My Greek friend went from the back to the front of the bus and said a few words out loud to the driver.. After the speech, the driver stopped the bus and came to the back of the bus to the woman.. By the way, I was trying to make sense of what was going on at the back of the bus.. The driver shouted at the woman, showing the bags with hand signals and I think she wanted them to collect them or take them in her lap, although the woman seemed to object, she could not stand it and made a move to get off the bus; While getting off, he quickly walked away from the bus, saying something to me and then to my friend.
After the noise of the incident was over, I learned that the woman was not very mentally stable.. However, the situation caused by a seat reminded me of my country, where the concept of human rights was being discussed so loudly.. If the same situation had happened to us, if we had gone to the driver and explained the situation; Would the driver laugh or would he do the same?

Things to do in Plomari
The so-called ‘old town’ in the center of the town, which is one of the oldest settlements on the island, is where you can witness typical Greek architecture.. Two-story, bay window, mostly wooden houses line the narrow streets.. It is essential to enjoy walking among the historical houses on quiet and calm streets without traffic noise and to breathe the atmosphere of the town.
There are many shops, shops and coffee houses around the big plane tree in the city square.. After wandering the streets, it is quite enjoyable to relax, have a drink and chat with the local people.

Plomari is 42 km from the center of the island of Lesvos.. Due to the nature of the road, this journey takes approximately 50 minutes by private vehicle.. In order to go to this town from Turkey, it is necessary to take a ferry from Ayvalık to Lesbos.. After the ferry ride that takes 1 hour and 15 minutes, the port of Lesbos is reached.. There is a municipal bus service between Mytilene and Plomari that runs 3-4 times a day.. However, without the hassle of the city bus, choose a pleasant journey by renting a car and being included in the nature view.
Plomari with its unspoiled nature, friendly people, historical structures, magnificent beaches, ouzo, olive oil and soap >, one of the most beautiful corners of Lesbos. Those planning a trip to Mytilene should spend a few days in this beautiful town.
After our tiring and intense trip to India, we got out of the chaos and arrived in Nepal, where we said “oh there is a world”. Whether Buddhist or Hindu, everyone can easily perform their daily rituals according to their religious beliefs.. There are enough temples in the city. Someone who goes to work or wanders around the streets completes his prayer by ringing the bell in the tiny temple on the street and applying the red paint inside the temple to his forehead.. A person who has prayed has red paint on his forehead. When you see this, know that that person has prayed. Let’s not forget that the main element of flower worship. During the worship we witnessed in temples, they offer flowers to their gods and light candles.
We were surprised that the fruits we ate did not taste salty, although agriculture is the livelihood of the country.. Especially when we say that the banana is disgusting that we have not eaten in our life, we say it’s like straw, we ate a banana that tasted just like that.. We got our Nepal visa quickly and very easily at the airport for 25 USD (15 days). They came to meet us because our hotel had a pick-up service.. We arrived at our hotel without the need to take a taxi.

But first, let’s list the must-haves and some information you need to know for those who are considering coming to Nepal:
Take a mask. Too much air pollution in the city. If you don’t want to walk in dust and smoke, take your mask.

Those who come to Nepal by plane should get a free map from the airport.. The map you will get from the hotels is not very descriptive and guiding.
Visit the bookstores in the Thamel area. There is a wide variety of books, magazines and many products for anyone interested in books, not just travelers.
Buy LP-Nepal. If not, you can find it in Thamel.. But those who do not want to buy definitely need a guide in the temple areas.. But for me, the temples and the figures carved on the temple do not mean anything, if you only want to take pictures of them, you do not even need a guide.. They charge up to 100 rs from tourists, don’t give more than 25 rs. For your information! Locals don’t like discounts in Kathmandu.
